Organizations for Climate Action

Cape Verde, a uniquely beautiful archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, faces substantial challenges due to climate change and the urgent need to conserve its natural resources. In this context, three organisations have emerged as undisputed leaders, committed to environmental protection, building population capacity to face climate challenges and empowering youth to lead the transition to a more sustainable future by being actively involved in climate action: The Institute of the Sea (IMar), the Cape Verdean Institute for Gender Equality and Equity (ICIEG) and the National Civil Protection and Fire Service (SNPCB)These three institutions were present at the first edition of the Children and Youth Academy for Climate Action (AcIJ) and let’s find out more about them.

IMar: Marine Conservation and Youth Engagement

The Institute of the Sea (IMar) plays an invaluable role in safeguarding Cape Verde’s marine ecosystems, while raising awareness among the population about the impacts of climate change, with an emphasis on children and young people. Through a multidisciplinary approach, IMar mobilises the community in scientific research initiatives, environmental monitoring and the promotion of sustainable fishing practices. In addition, the institution fosters youth engagement through robust educational programmes, collaborations with schools and universities, and the promotion of citizen science. By empowering future generations, IMar aims to ensure the sustainability and vitality of marine ecosystems for the future of Cape Verde.

ICIEG: Gender Equity and Climate Resilience

The Cape Verdean Institute for Gender Equality and Equity (ICIEG) is at the forefront of efforts to address the impacts of climate change in Cape Verde, with a particular focus on gender equity. Through strategic partnerships and comprehensive intervention projects, ICIEG aims to mitigate historical inequalities by promoting youth empowerment in crucial areas such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and sexual health. The organisation promotes the active participation of young people in issues related to climate and gender, seeking to create an environment of equitable and inclusive opportunities for all Cape Verdean citizens.

SNPCB: Preparing Youth to Face Climate Challenges

The National Civil Protection and Fire Service (SNPCB) plays an essential role in preparing Cape Verde’s population, especially young people, to face the impacts of climate change and prevent natural disasters. Through a set of educational programmes, specialised training and strategic partnerships, the SNPCB empowers young people to become agents of change in their communities, strengthening resilience and security in the face of imminent climate challenges.

Joining forces for a sustainable and resilient future

These three organisations stand out for their unwavering commitment to environmental protection, the promotion of gender equality, youth empowerment and preparing the population to face the challenges of climate change in Cape Verde. With integrated approaches and collaborative actions, IMar, ICIEG and SNPCB are charting a path towards a more sustainable, resilient and equitable future for the country’s present and future generations.
In a world in constant transformation, these institutions are fundamental pillars in building a Cape Verde that is more aware, fair and prepared for the environmental challenges of the 21st century. United, these organisations are shaping a promising future, where preserving the environment, empowering youth and equal opportunities are key priorities.
