Maio hosts the 1st edition of the Children’s and Youth Academy for Climate Action

Maio Island will host the 1st edition of the Children’s and Youth Academy for Climate Action (AcIJ), which will take place from 22 to 26 July. The event is an initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, through the National Directorate of the Environment.

According to a government statement, the opening session is scheduled for today, at 10:00 am, at Horace Silver Secondary School.

During the academy, participants will have the opportunity to develop project ideas related to climate action, supported by mentoring sessions.

Additionally, technical sessions will be offered that will address topics such as climate and science, policies and instruments, initiatives and projects, leadership, communication and advocacy.

The same source states that the holding of this event is linked to the celebration of the 34th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and “World Children’s Day”, celebrated on November 20, 2023.

On that date, an extraordinary session of the Children and Youth Parliament (PIJ) was organized, focusing on Children’s Rights and Climate Action. During this session, dynamic activities explored the relationship between the CRC and climate action, increasing children and adolescents’ knowledge about the risks and opportunities that climate change represents for the full realization of their rights. The event culminated with the presentation of a Climate Manifesto.

“Following the implementation of this Manifesto, an Academy will be organized

Children and Youth for Climate Action (AcIJ) on the island of Maio, in Cape Verde, from 22 to 26 July”, it reads.
