EDM presents Carnival 2025 synopsis with “immersion” in climate urgency

The Estrela do Mar Carnival and Civic Association (EDM) presented this Monday the synopsis of Carnival 2025. EDM will use the Mindelo sambadrome to transmit a message of alert and hope, because it believes that “there is still time to save the planet”.

The aim is to promote environmental awareness as a key factor in transforming the current scenario of climate change and global warming, as explained by EDM carnival designer Emanuel Ribeiro.

“We will call for a true demonstration of colors, rhythms and revelry in the streets of Morada in 2025, denouncing what Pope Francis called the great sin against creation. We will stand in solidarity with those who stand up against the seven scourges of the present day that some see as the seven trumpets of the apocalypse: pollutants, marine pollution, fires, deforestation, open-air garbage, greenhouse gases, unsustainable livestock farming, and the unplanned concrete construction of the planet. EDM will call for the urgent preservation of the planet,” he says.

According to Emanuel Ribeiro, the idea is not to dramatize the situation, but to awaken a more ecological social conscience.

“We will not just dramatize the situation. EDM will bring a cry of alert, but also a cry of hope and we will end our show saying that the new green can be reborn, with a more ecological awareness, with more social awareness through small things, including in relation to waste. With small behaviors, such as planting more trees, we can stop this phenomenon that we are all feeling firsthand, for example, the temperature amplitude that we have had this year, and other effects”, he says.

With the theme “I Love Earth – In defense of its green orchard, Estrela do Mar calls for an end to global warming”, the carnival association hopes to attract around 1,200 revelers to the São Vicente carnival, accompanied by three floats, two tripods and a quadripod. As for the budget, projections point to around 12 thousand contos.

Júlio do Rosário, president of EDM, states that a campaign to raise funds to carry out the project is underway.

“We are going to develop everything so that when we get to November, at least, we can have everything very well organized, so that we don’t have to worry about having to rush through the month before Carnival. We hope that a month before Carnival our focus will be on rehearsals and the finalization and finishing of the floats. We want to start building the floats in October, following our Carnival designer’s schedule”, he assures.

During the event, a partnership agreement was signed with the environmental association Biosfera I, with a duration of one year, renewable. The agreement aims to involve the two institutions in carrying out joint activities in favor of the environment.
