Government points to energy transition as fundamental for country to double economic growth potential

The government today described the energy transition as ‘one of the most important’ if Cape Verde is to have cheaper, cleaner energy that is less dependent on external funds, with the aim of doubling the growth potential of the Cape Verdean economy.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance gave these assurances during the opening of the 5th International Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fair, which is taking place at the Cape Verde International Fair (FIC), an event that forms part of the government’s ‘broader strategy’, given its commitment to a liveable planet and a sustainable world.

“This is fundamental and crucial for Cape Verde. It is crucial for citizens and crucial for companies that we have cheaper energy, cleaner energy and energy that is less dependent on external funds and energy that is more anchored in endogenous resources. It’s fundamental for climate action, for the economy, for families and for people,’ said Olavo Correia.

The president explained that the executive is committed to climate action from the perspective of mitigation, resilience and adaptation, and stressed the importance of the country committing to these objectives, emphasising that ‘climate change, pollution… are not a chimera and not just a problem for foreign countries, but for the whole world.

This problem, he said, affects small island states in particular, which is why he warned against taking on these responsibilities, as it is a serious environmental problem, the warming of the planet, which is why he urged everyone to look towards a better and more sustainable future.

“We have to protect our planet and this is the responsibility of each and every one of us, particularly its leaders. We have to protect our territory, we have to have a responsibility because our vision, the vision of the world and of Cape Verde is of a greener, bluer, more digital, smarter, more open and more inclusive country,’ he said.

The fifth edition of the International Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fair is being held under the slogan ‘Building a Sustainable Future’.

In addition to the exhibition of products and services from more than 40 national and international stands, a ‘Thematic Forum’ on the energy transition is taking place in parallel, with the participation of national and international speakers.
