The Ministry of Finance, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), convened a crucial meeting in Praia. The focus of the meeting was the preparation of the Readiness projects by the joint steering committee. These initiatives, financed by the Green Climate Fund, aim to address climate action within the framework of the blue economy, while promoting sustainable tourism.
Cabo Verde’s environmental and economic vulnerabilities call for “environmentally friendly” public policies. Despite its stunning natural beauty, the country faces challenges in mitigating the impacts of climate change, in its adaptation strategy and in its financial capacity.
Cabo Verde has embarked, since April 2022, on its inaugural Readiness project, financed by the Green Climate Fund, aimed at strengthening national capacities to face the impacts of climate change in key sectors of the blue economy. This initiative, executed by the FAO, has an 18-month timeframe.
Another crucial undertaking, the Project to Support the National Programme and Planning for Sustainable Tourism, executed by UNIDO, was launched in March 2023. Also financed by the Green Climate Fund, this project aims to help the country improve its performance in the fight against climate change, while at the same time promoting sustainable tourism.
The government emphasises that Cabo Verde has been investing in sustainable tourism projects, with a view to long-term solutions in the fight against climate change through actions that cut across various sectors of activity.
This concerted effort reflects Cabo Verde’s commitment to sustainable development, recognising the interconnected nature of environmental preservation, economic prosperity and social well-being. Through collaborative initiatives and strategic investments, Cabo Verde is paving the way for a greener and more resilient future.
