COP28: Cabo Verde calls on more countries to follow Portugal’s example in debt conversion

The Cape Verdean Prime Minister called on more States to follow Portugal’s example and convert the debt of developing countries into climate financing, ensuring that it is “a good investment”.

“This step is very important, and we want other creditors to follow Portugal’s example, not to be afraid because they will be making a good investment”, said Ulisses Correia e Silva at the end of the signing ceremony of the addendum to the memorandum on debt reconversion between Portugal and Cabo Verde.

The agreement was signed on the first day of the Prime Minister’s visit to the 28th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28), taking place in Dubai, where Portugal also signed a similar agreement with São Tomé e Príncipe.
