The Water and Sanitation Programme, funded by Luxembourg Cooperation for the period 2021-2025 and valued at 18 million euros, was analysed in Praia, at the 3rd meeting of the Steering Committee.
The programme was developed with a pragmatic approach, focused on Cabo Verde’s priority needs and with a view to solving problems effectively. The committee responsible for analysing and approving the programme outlined a work plan aimed at strengthening the operational efficiency of municipal companies and consolidating the governance and segment of the water and sanitation sector in Cabo Verde.
During the discussions, Luxembourg’s commitment to continuing to support the Programme’s initiatives became clear, with special attention to the first steps of the activities in the waters of Santo Antão and São Nicolau. Among the various investments, the completion and operationalisation of the first solar desalination plant on Ilha Brava stands out as a significant commitment to the country’s energy transition. This project responds to the challenges of water shortages and their direct relationship with public health.
In addition, the implementation of circular economy practices based on wastewater utilisation in Tarrafal, Santiago Island, was mentioned. This project will contribute to increasing affluents and the quality of its water resources. Additional funding from Hungary will also make it possible to educate people on how to apply it properly in agriculture.
The improvement in the population’s quality of life thanks to this international support was recognised at this ceremony, which was attended by the main representatives of the Cape Verdean nation and representatives of Luxembourg Cooperation.
