Climate change

What there is to know about climate change and the Cape Verdean context

What is climate change?

Climate change is a complex phenomenon characterized by an increase in global temperature due to the high intensity of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate change is a complex phenomenon caused by an increase in greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere. These gases can originate from natural phenomena or industrial processes.

And what are the causes?

Climate change is mainly the result of human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and intensive agricultural practices.
Climate change is mainly caused by human activities, although it is exacerbated by natural factors such as volcanic eruptions and variations in solar radiation. The burning of fossil fuels (such as coal, oil and natural gas) for energy production, transportation and industrial processes – driven by excessive consumption – is the main source of carbon dioxide emissions.

...And the consequences?

The consequences of climate change include melting ice at the poles, coastal flooding, changes to ecosystems, extreme weather events and threats to food security and global health.
The consequences of climate change are extensive and far-reaching. As global temperatures continue to rise, we are witnessing a cascade of environmental, social and economic impacts.

...And solutions?

In order to solve the climate crisis in which we live, we need to invest in the energy transition, ocean conservation, reforestation and the adoption of more sustainable consumption habits, among other things.
Combating climate change requires a systemic approach involving individuals, governments, companies and international cooperation. This approach can take two forms:

Mitigation

Acting on the causes and reducing GHG emissions

Adaptation

Acting on the consequences, minimising negative impacts and taking advantage of positive ones

...And in Cabo Verde?

Despite its low GHG emissions, Cabo Verde is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change.

Like other Small Island Developing States (SIDS), it contributes little to global warming. But due to the fragility of its ecosystems, it is among the countries suffering the most from the consequences, with an increase in climate aridity and the frequency of droughts, worsening saltwater intrusion and deterioration of groundwater, soil degradation and loss of biodiversity, and an increase in the frequency of storms and hurricanes, among others.
